The Savoy Theatre Society is receiving a $150,000 contribution through Enterprise Cape Breton Corporation (ECBC) to renovate the historic theatre’s Union Street façade and to improve the fire protection system. These repairs were identified as priorities in a recent building audit.
The renovations have begun and should be completed by spring 2014.The total cost is estimated to be $225,000.
The Savoy is owned and operated by a not-for-profit society dedicated to providing residents and visitors with a variety of local, national and international entertainment.
A restored 1920s Victorian-style show house, the theatre is located in downtown Glace Bay and enjoys the reputation of being one of the finest entertainment facilitates in eastern Canada. It has been nominated for an East Coast Music Award as venue of the year on several occasions.
In 2013 the Savoy Theatre hosted 200 performances and attracted 70,000 patrons.
Over the years, the Savoy has been host to a variety of entertainers such as Liona Boyd,
KD Lang, Leonard Cohen, Natalie MacMaster, Michelle Wright, Kay Boutilier, Great Big Sea, The White Stripes and many more top musicians.
The theatre has also been host to a variety of musicals, most recently Les Misérables, and in May 2014 Chicago will be performed on the Savoy stage.
Currently, main stage performances seat up to 761 people while an alternate space for dinner theatre and smaller performances can seat as many as 150.
“Our Government is committed to supporting initiatives that enhance community infrastructure, help build strong, vibrant communities and contribute to local economic growth. The Savoy has been a focal point for almost a century providing a unique performance venue for local and visiting artists and musicians. The successful completion of this project will enable it to continue to contribute to the economic development of Cape Breton.”
Senator Michael L. MacDonald
“The Savoy has served the community well over the years and thanks to these renovations, we look forward to continuing in our role as Cape Breton’s premiere entertainment showplace. ECBC has been a stalwart supporter of the Savoy Theatre and we appreciate the Government of Canada’s support.”
