MINISTER MACKAY ANNOUNCES SUPPORT FOR THE
DEVELOPMENT OF A FOUR-SEASON RECREATION COMPLEX ON CAPE BRETON ISLAND

BEN EOIN (NS) – October 27, 2012The Honourable Peter MacKay, Minister of National Defence and Regional Minister for Nova Scotia, on behalf of the Honourable Bernard Valcourt, Associate Minister of National Defence and Minister of State (Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency) (La Francophonie), today announced support from the Government of Canada for the development of a four-season recreation complex in Ben Eoin.

"This investment is part of a long-term vision that will result in the development of a four-season recreation complex in Ben Eoin that will attract visitors and serve as a catalyst for further economic development activities,” said Minister MacKay. “Our Government’s support for the development of a four-season recreation complex in Ben Eoin is another concrete example of our commitment to Cape Breton and towards job creation, economic growth and long-term prosperity.”

Ben Eoin Marina Ltd. is completing construction of a full-service marina facility at Ben Eoin consisting of 74 berths and related infrastructure for both local and visiting boaters. The marina will offer a complete range of services including docking, fuel, pump-out, water, power, laundry, washrooms, showers and general boating supplies. Visitors requiring food and beverage service will avail themselves of the amenities available at the adjacent Lakes Golf Course and Ski Ben Eoin. The addition of a marina building with meeting space and common areas will also allow for the operation of a junior sailing program.

The total cost of the development is $4.8 million. Due to the strategic importance of a marina to the development of a four-season recreation complex, ECBC has provided a non-repayable contribution of $4 million.

Across the road from the marina, the Cape Breton Ski Club, owners and operators of Ski Ben Eoin, is undertaking a major upgrade of the not-for-profit ski facility which includes improvements to the beginner area, the addition of a new novice run, the installation of a carpet lift as well as improvements to the facility’s lighting, grooming and snow-making capacity.

The total cost of this project is $905,000 and the Government of Canada, through ECBC, is providing a non-repayable contribution of $695,000.

The long-term value proposition for a four-season recreation complex at Ben Eoin is being realized through The Lakes Golf Course, Ski Ben Eoin and Ben Eoin Marina Ltd. as key stakeholders in an integrated governance and operational structure. By building on The Lakes’ reputation as a premiere golf destination, Ski Ben Eoin’s commitment to quality winter recreation and the Bras d’Or Lake’s natural beauty and appeal to boaters, the area is poised to attract additional private sector commercial and residential investment which will serve to create further employment and related economic activity. ECBC has taken a leadership role in the development and phased implementation of the vision.
