GOVERNMENT OF CANADA SUPPORTS THE WORLD UNDER-17 HOCKEY CHALLENGE 2014 ON CAPE BRETON ISLAND

SYDNEY (NS) – October 12, 2012 – Thanks to support from the Government of Canada, Cape Breton Island will benefit from significant economic spinoffs when it hosts the 2014 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge.

"Our government's top priority is jobs, growth, and long-term prosperity and that is why we are pleased to invest in projects that stimulate local economic activity” said the Honourable Lisa Raitt, Minister of Labour, on behalf of the Honourable Bernard Valcourt, Associate Minister of National Defence and Minister of State (Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency) (La Francophonie). “The  World Under-17 Hockey Challenge will not only provide an opportunity to experience world-class hockey, but it will be a significant boost to the local economy attracting hockey fans and officials from around the world to Cape Breton Island.”

Hockey Canada has announced that it has awarded the hosting of the 2014 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge to Cape Breton Island. Recognizing the potential economic impact of such an event, the Government of Canada, through Enterprise Cape Corporation (ECBC), is contributing up to $390,000 to the local host committee to assist in staging the event.

The World Under-17 Hockey Challenge will take place between December 28, 2013 and January 4, 2014, attracting in excess of 1,000 off-island participants, fans and officials to Cape Breton during what is traditionally a slow time of year. The primary venue will be Sydney’s Centre 200 and the secondary locations will be the Port Hawkesbury Civic Centre and the Emera Centre in North Sydney.

This prestigious hockey event will bring together some of the top under-17 players in the world. The regional under-17 program is the first step in Hockey Canada’s Program of Excellence. Many players who compete at the World Under-17 Hockey Challenge go on to represent Canada with the National Men’s Under-18 Team, National Junior Team and National Men’s Team. Since the first World Under-17 Hockey Challenge (then known as the Quebec Esso Cup) in 1986, more than 1,200 NHL draft picks have played in the tournament.

“Cape Breton has a rich hockey tradition making it a perfect location to host this major international sporting event,” said Eric MacRae, chair of the local host committee that submitted the bid to acquire the Under-17 Hockey Challenge.  “Our success is due in large measure to our experienced volunteer base, world-class venues and facilities, appealing culture and warm hospitality. Our experienced committee can’t wait to bring Cape Breton to the world and we are confident that this event will exceed the expectations of participants, fans and officials while providing significant economic benefits to the community.”

Enterprise Cape Breton Corporation is a federal Crown corporation offering programs in support of commercial development, community development, environmental stewardship and real property development on Cape Breton Island and in the Mulgrave area.
