HARPER GOVERNMENT ANNOUNCES FUNDING FOR A SECOND BUSINESS CENTRE IN MEMBERTOU

SYDNEY (NS) – September 6, 2012 – Commercial activity in the community of Membertou will continue to expand with the construction of a second business centre thanks to support from the Harper Government through Enterprise Cape Breton Corporation (ECBC). The announcement was made today by the Honourable Lisa Raitt, Minister of Labour on behalf of the Honourable Bernard Valcourt, Associate Minister of National Defence and Minister of State (Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency) (La Francophonie)..

"Our government's top priority is jobs, growth, and long-term prosperity,” said Minister Raitt. “This project is an example of our Government’s commitment to making strategic investments across the country that directly benefit both Aboriginal communities as well as the surrounding areas.”

This 8,796 m2 business centre will be located on Churchill Drive and house up to 10 units. It will accommodate commercial tenants and provide development space for new organizations and incubation space for emerging Aboriginal businesses. As with the first business centre, the facility will generate sufficient revenues to cover overhead expenses, support the incubator space and provide the Membertou Band Council with funds to be utilized in pursuit of other economic development opportunities.

The total cost of the facility is $4.25 million and ECBC is providing a loan of $500,000 and a contribution of $500,000.

“By co-locating new entrepreneurs with experienced business owners, we hope to expose business novices to role models and mentors who can provide inspiration and practical advice,” said Chief Terrance Paul of Membertou. “This approach will generate greater prosperity for the people of Membertou and for the broader Cape Breton community.”

Membertou is an urban First Nation community on Cape Breton Island, located a few kilometers from the heart of Sydney, Nova Scotia. It is widely recognized to be one of Canada’s most progressive and entrepreneurial First Nations.

Enterprise Cape Breton Corporation offers programs in support of economic development initiatives and is responsible for delivering ACOA’s programs on Cape Breton Island and in the Mulgrave area.
