SENATOR MICHAEL L. MACDONALD ANNOUNCES SUPPORT TO IMPROVE THE NORTHERN YACHT CLUB
NORTH SYDNEY (NS) – February 15, 2012 – Senator Michael L. MacDonald, on behalf of the Honourable Bernard Valcourt, Minister of State for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA) and La Francophonie, announced today a federal financial support for major upgrades at the marina facilities of the Northern Yacht Club.
“Economic development and job creation remain our Government’s top priorities. Investment in the Northern Yacht Club will have a positive impact on the local economy, enabling the facility to host sailing events and attract visiting boaters to the area,” said Senator MacDonald. “Our support for this project is rooted in the knowledge that modern, sustainable community infrastructure is essential to long-term economic development.”
The upgrades to the club’s marina will provide a needed service to visiting boaters to Cape Breton Island. The work underway includes the removal and re-facing of the existing wharf, the establishment of a rock face with concrete anchors, the removal of a deteriorated wharf structure and the installation of a floating dock system.
Increasing recreational boating on Cape Breton Island has potential to stimulate economic development. This project is consistent with the recommendations of ECBC’s 2009 Cape Breton Marina Study that seeks to capitalize on the growing North American recreational boating sector by enhancing marina infrastructure in strategic locations across the Island
The Government of Canada, through ECBC, provided an investment of $390,000 toward the development of this facility. The total cost of the project was $520,000.
Established in 1924 and incorporated in 1925, the Northern Yacht Club provided canoeing, swimming and aquatic activities to the community. Strategically located on the northwest arm of Sydney Harbour, it has hosted a number of international, national and regional sailing events. Offering both junior and adult learn-to-sail programs, the club includes a newly designed junior sailing building which is home to a junior sailing program for the community.
