Sydney (NS) – July 23, 2010 – With Government of Canada assistance, a new festival is being launched this weekend to celebrate the beautiful Bras d’Or Lakes, Canada’s Inland Sea. Running from July 23 to August 8, the Bras d’Or Lakes Festival will provide two action-packed weeks of sailing, boating, music, and cultural events in the communities along the shores of the Bras d’Or Lakes.
“Our government is pleased to work with communities to build on their strengths,” said the Honourable Keith Ashfield, Minister of National Revenue, Minister of the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA) and Minister for the Atlantic Gateway. “The Bras d’Or Lakes have strong destination appeal and this festival is designed to attract more visitors to the Lakes and Cape Breton Island as a whole.
Enterprise Cape Breton Corporation (ECBC) has provided $45,000 in funding assistance for this year’s festival to support marketing and promotion activities as well as event logistics.
A festival committee, consisting of representatives from across the Island, is being established. The committee plans to host an annual event building on the many events that happen on and around the Bras d’Or Lakes each year. Building an event focused on the Bras d’Or Lakes is a key component of ECBC’s Major Events Strategy.
