NORTHERN YACHT CLUB COMMUNITY MARINE CENTRE OPENS WITH SUPPORT FROM THE GOVERNMENT OF CANADA

North Sydney (NS) – July 19, 2010 – A new community marine centre at the Northern Yacht Club was officially opened today in North Sydney thanks to an investment from the Government of Canada, through Enterprise Cape Breton Corporation (ECBC).

“Our Government’s investment in the Northern Yacht Club will have a positive impact on the local economy, enabling the facility to host sailing events that will attract participants and their families to the area,” said the Honourable Keith Ashfield, Minister of National Revenue, Minister of the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA) and Minister for the Atlantic Gateway. “We are pleased to support a project that builds on local strengths to enhance economic development opportunities.”

The Government of Canada, through ECBC, provided an investment of $133,925 toward the development of this facility. The total cost of the project was $178,171.

The Northern Yacht Club (NYC) Junior Sailing Association has established a community marine centre by converting an existing building into a facility suitable for hosting junior sailing programs and events. The project involved the construction of an office, washrooms, showers, classrooms and a loft for judging events.

Established in 1924, the NYC Junior Sailing Association provided canoeing, swimming and aquatic activities to the community. During the 1960s, the club began offering junior sailing instruction and continues to offer instruction to children and young adults.

Enterprise Cape Breton Corporation offers programs in support of economic development initiatives and is responsible for delivering ACOA’s programs on Cape Breton Island and in the Mulgrave area.
