PETIT-DE-GRAT (NS) – June 9, 2010 – A new marine centre at the Petit-de-Grat Campus of the Université Sainte-Anne was officially opened today.
“This new addition to the community is an investment that will promote long term economic development on Cape Breton Island,” said the Honourable Keith Ashfield, Minister of National Revenue, Minister of the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA) and Minister for the Atlantic Gateway. “The centre, which will strengthen the sustainability of marine related industries through research, innovation and education, will build on the strengths of the region’s marine sector.”
The Government of Canada, through Enterprise Cape Breton Corporation, has provided an investment of $475,000 toward the development of this facility.
The centre will work with industry partners to research and test new equipment, develop best practices and increase the value of traditional species while exploring new species growth. The centre will also function as an interpretive centre where visitors and residents can learn about local marine life and conservation efforts.
“The addition of a marine centre in Petit-de-Grat is an investment in the university and the community,” said the Rector and Vice-Chancellor of the Université Ste.-Anne, André Roberge. “It will provide hands on learning opportunities for students while contributing to the growth and sustainability of the marine sector and the local economy.”
Université Sainte-Anne is the only French language, post secondary institution in Nova Scotia. It offers courses and programs at campuses located across the Province. The Petit-de-Grat campus has established itself as a leader in educational and training excellence and plays a significant role in the marine industry.
Enterprise Cape Breton Corporation offers programs in support of economic development initiatives and is responsible for delivering ACOA’s programs on Cape Breton Island and in the Mulgrave area.
