SYDNEY (NS) – March 8, 2010 – The Honourable Keith Ashfield, Minister of National Revenue, Minister of the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA) and Minister for the Atlantic Gateway, was in Sydney this past weekend to attend the annual East Coast Music Awards (ECMAs).
After attending a number of performances at various venues over the weekend and presenting an award at Sunday’s gala show, Minister Ashfield noted “Atlantic Canada’s music scene continues to grow, producing a diverse array of world-class artists and entertainers who are some of this region’s best ambassadors. Our government recognizes the importance of the music sector to Atlantic Canada’s economy. That’s why we support initiatives like the ECMAs.”
The Government of Canada has invested more than $635,000 to support the East Coast Music Association’s efforts to host the 2010 and 2011 ECMAs. The funding has been provided through ACOA, Enterprise Cape Breton Corporation (ECBC) and the Department of Canadian Heritage.
“The diversity of artists performing at this year’s ECMA has been truly impressive, said the Honourable James Moore, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages. “Our Government is proud to invest in the promotion of Atlantic Canada’s talented singers, songwriters, and musicians.”
The Department of Canadian Heritage provided $140,000 in assistance to the 2010 event in Cape Breton. ACOA’s funding supported the association’s on-going marketing initiatives and promotional events, including the annual awards, conference and festival. ECBC’s funding assisted with this year’s International Export Program.
Thanks to Government of Canada support, the Association’s annual conference has been able to promote the export potential of the Atlantic music industry. An international program has been introduced that brings buyers, presenters and cultural trade officers from embassies and consulates around the world to Atlantic Canada for a showcase of the region’s talent. The presence of these individuals provides excellent networking opportunities for the artists. In addition, delegates have access to export and marketing training.
“The creativity, talent and hospitality I experienced in Cape Breton this weekend has been truly memorable,” said Minister Ashfield.
