WHITNEY PIER (NS) – February 17, 2009 – A significant investment from the Government of Canada will assist Whitney Pier implement the second phase of a community revitalization initiative.

At a news conference held today, the Honourable Keith Ashfield, Minister of State (Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency), announced $355,000 in federal funding, through Enterprise Cape Breton Corporation (ECBC), for improvements to the commercial district of Whitney Pier, including a cost-shared facade improvement program for local businesses, the installation of new lamp standards and benches, and new signage.

“The Government of Canada is pleased to work with local residents to help build stronger communities and stimulate economic development,” said Minister Ashfield. “This project builds on the success of Phase I which not only resulted in a marked improvement to a number of commercial establishments in the area, but also the creation of new businesses and a general increase in community pride.”

The project is being administered by the Cape Breton County Economic Development Authority (CBCEDA). In 2006, ECBC approved $400,000 to implement Phase I of the Whitney Pier redevelopment. Under CBCEDA’s direction, eight building facades were refurbished and various community improvements were implemented to enhance the area.

The total cost of Phase II is $720,000. ECBC will invest $355,000 through ACOA’s Innovative Communities Fund. The Cape Breton Regional Municipality is also contributing $15,000.

CBCEDA is a regional development authority that works with all levels of government to promote economic development throughout Cape Breton County.

Enterprise Cape Breton Corporation offers programs in support of economic development initiatives and is responsible for delivering ACOA's programs on Cape Breton Island and in the Mulgrave area.
