GOVERNMENT OF CANADA SUPPORTS DOWNTOWN REVITALIZATION IN NORTH SYDNEY
North Sydney (NS) – September 4, 2008 – North Sydney’s waterfront will get a facelift as a result of a contribution from the Government of Canada through Enterprise Cape Breton Corporation, as announced today by Peter MacKay, Minister of National Defence and Minister of the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency.
“Through this ECBC investment of $521,749, the Government of Canada is strengthening North Sydney’s economic base and stimulating further development while helping further develop Cape Breton Island’s tourism and community infrastructure,” said Minister Peter MacKay. “This project will attract new industry, encourage business expansion and local entrepreneurship in North Sydney.”
This investment will allow the Business Improvement and Development Association (B.I.D.A.) to conduct Phase II of its downtown development program in North Sydney. This phase will include a facade improvement program for approximately 23 buildings, a signage program, streetscape and green space upgrades and enhancements to Archibald’s Wharf. The project is expected to create economic spinoffs, leverage private investments and enhance the pride of the community.
“Ultimately the goal of this revitalization plan is to establish North Sydney as a viable downtown community that spurs growth and meets the needs of its residents, businesses and visitors”, said Monique Cashin, the B.I.D.A. community development officer.
The total cost of the downtown revitalization project is $1,032,082. Enterprise Cape Breton Corporation is providing a contribution of $521,749 through ACOA’s Innovative Communities Fund.
Enterprise Cape Breton Corporation offers programs in support of economic development initiatives and is responsible for delivering ACOA’s programs on Cape Breton Island and in the Mulgrave area.
