GLACE BAY (NS) – July 25, 2008 – The Government of Canada, through Enterprise Cape Breton Corporation (ECBC), and the Cape Breton Regional Municipality (CBRM), announced today an investment of $411,000 to upgrade Renwick Brook Park, in Glace Bay, Nova Scotia. The announcement was made by Gerald Keddy, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA) and to the Minister of International Trade, along with CBRM Mayor John Morgan.
“The Government of Canada’s investment of $224,000 in Glace Bay is a commitment to building stronger communities by strengthening the Island’s tourism and community infrastructure,” said Parliamentary Secretary Keddy, on behalf of the Honourable Peter MacKay, Minister of National Defence and Minister of ACOA.
“Alongside the façade improvement program that was recently completed in Glace Bay, this plan to upgrade Renwick Brook Park is enabling Glace Bay to attract tourists and potential investors. Such infrastructure enhancements make Glace Bay an attractive place to work, visit and live,” said CBRM Mayor John Morgan.
Renwick Brook Park is a 4.1 kilometer network of trails that was constructed between 1983 and 1986. ECBC’s investment will be used to revitalize the park—a process which includes resurfacing the trails, as well as providing improved lighting, additional benches and other enhancements.
The total cost of the project is $561,000. Through ECBC, the Government of Canada is providing a non-repayable contribution of $224,000 from ACOA’s Innovative Communities Fund. The CBRM is contributing $187,000. Provincial government assistance of $150,000 was previously announced.
Enterprise Cape Breton Corporation offers programs in support of economic development initiatives and is responsible for delivering ACOA’s programs on Cape Breton Island and the Mulgrave area.
